Preface

OK...so I have decided to start a Blog, or Weblog, or whatever it is called these days. I consider myself to have a good working knowledge of computers and the Internet...but honestly, this blogging thing has passed me by and I really do not know much about it. I hear terms and phrases that apply to the computer world ( I think) that mean nothing to me... one recent term is a "cloud". The only thing I know about clouds are the cumulus and nimbus that i learned about in some science class back in elementary school...in fact, I am not even sure that i have those names right or spelled correctly. So I ask you...what is a cloud in the computer world?

Anyway...back to me and blogging. I have decided to start a year long daily blog. My inspiration for this new venture came from the movie Julie and Julia. Now, I am not planning on starting a project the way she did ( i am not that crazy)...but merely just a daily account of what i am doing in my life. Some days will be exciting some will be very boring...as is life for most of us average Americans.

So in preparation for beginning this year long daily venture...here is a little background of me, etc...

In reference to the movie/book Julie and Julia... I have a small bit in common with that story. More with Julia rather than Julie. In my early thirties I was about to get laid off from my Job and was given a choice of either losing my job or transferring to our office in the Atlanta area. I originally turned down the transfer and was going to just take my severance and move on. However, after doing some research on the ATL area, i discovered they had a branch of Le Cordon Bleu there. I had always wanted to go to culinary school, so I decided to take the transfer. So at age 34, I moved to ATL. I was working 7 to 4 at my full time job and attending culinary school from 5 to 11....Monday through Friday for 18 months. Sixteen hour days 5 days a week for a year and half. It was truly a grueling schedule, but i loved every minute of it, and would do it all over again, if i didn't have to pay for it again. Actually, if you want to know what the Le Cordon Bleu experience is like...you should read this book:

"The Sharper Your Knife, The Less You Cry" by Kathleen Flinn. This book is amazing. The author and I were actually going to Le Cordon Bleu at the exact same time...although she was at the Paris campus, and I was in ATL. But our stories are very very similar...down to the circumstances that got us each into LCB, our ages, etc. Her story is very accurate as far as the classes and experiences she had at LCB. And don't worry if you do not have any Culinary knowledge, you do not need it to read this book. The story is all about her life while she was attending school. It will have you laughing, crying...and starving all the way through.

So after Culinary School, i was once again transferred with my job...back to the Memphis area. I have been trying to open my own catering company for about the past year and a half. This process is very slow and tedious....and expensive. It will get there in time I am sure.

This blog will probably not be any great work of art...or anything like the Hollywood "A year in the life of..." stories you see on TV or at the movies. But what this blog will be is a true, honest account of a typical, normal, average year for a single man in his late 30's in the Mid-South region of this great country.

So, sit back and enjoy the ride ... more of a Sunday drive than a car race, but a ride nonetheless.

Tomorrow...the venture begins.....

  5. I have wanted to go to culinary school for a while now. However, I am a vegetarian and I have cooked meat for people in past decade but I have cooked it by smell and I have always had a taste tester. So, instead of going to culinary school and have to taste test meat products I decided to learn as much as I could about bread baking and vegan cooking as possible. I am by no means vegan but I love being able to make something using only vegetable products. I am excited about your blog and would like to know more about your culinary experiences: meat and non-meat alike. I am also a fan of Julia and have made many of her recipes...Buche de Noel being one of them.
